Through the investigation from the semantic field of the English word-- "skin", we found that in the Middle English, native word was in the majority, but with the invasion of foreign loanwords, its dominant position was slowly losing.
Although these native words hasn′t died off, but the latercomers have surpassed the formers. Among these, the word "bark" replace the word "rind" means a kind of tough protective covering of the woody stems or other woody plants; "Fur" has replaced "fell" means the dressed hairy coat of a mammal; "Skin" take the place of "hide" means a natural protective body covering.
After the highlight of the similarity and relativity, and the cross domain projection through metaphor, or the domain transfer through metonymy, the semantic change is completed.
Due to the similar morphology, pod, ship and abdomen has been connected, and scale is uesd to refer to dandruff and coin; Due to the similar position, skin can stand for appearance; Due to the similar function, skin is used to refer to clothing apparel and sheltering houses.
Because of the relevance of whole and partial, whole and material,we use skin to refer to hunman or leather; Skin can be removed or be covered, so more than 80% of its relative actions in its own semantic field can be used as "skin"(used as a verb, means peel off the skin ) , the rest can be used as "skin"(used as a verb, means covered with skin).
